After
struggling with knee and arch pain in October and injuring his
knee in a Home Coming float incident just before the sub-section
meet in November, James fought back to win both the Division II
Sub-Section race and Division II Section race.
In early October, James was in great shape. He ran his first
varsity race in a league meet and finished in 7th place in 15:45
(a bit short of a three mile course). Unfortunately, James started
having knee pain and had a setback in his training the next week.
He finished a disappointing 7th place in the freshman race at
Bella Vista's own Bronco Invitational the next weekend at Folsom
High School. A week later, James had a another disappointing
race at the League Finals finishing 8th in the varsity race in
18:01 on a tough, hilly Folsom High School 5K course. James was disappointed
in his time and the fact that the top 7 earned All League status.
The day after the league meet (Friday night), James was walking
beside the freshman Home Coming float throwing candy in to the
stands when he got his foot caught under the wheel and was knocked
to the ground. The back wheel of the trailer ran over his knee
taking several layers of skin with it. James wasn't able to walk
without extreme pain and had trouble bending the knee for several
days (another set back in the training). With the sub-section meet
coming up, we weren't sure if he was going to heal quickly enough
to compete which would mean the end of the high school season.
After a trip to Kaiser for some antibacterial cream, the abrasions
started healing quickly and James was able to run a little by Thursday.
Glad to have James healing nicely and able to run at all, we made
the trip back down to Calaveras County the following Saturday for
the sub-section meet (qualifier for the section meet) with no expectations.
James' coach wanted to try to advance a frosh/soph team to the
Section meet so she put her best 8 freshman and sophomores in the
sophomore race. James ran an outstanding race earning the Sophomore
Division II Champion title (as a freshman)! Unfortunately, the
team finished 5th but James and a sophomore teammate qualified
to advance to the Section meet.
The next weekend we were back out at Folsom High School for the
Section Championships. Feeling good after winning the
Sub-Section race and getting back in to his training regime that
week, James took control of the tough Folsom High School course
to become the Division II Sophomore Champion!
Overall, James had a great season representing his high school
well and proudly. Go Broncos!
James has gotten his high school running career off to a great start with a league meet win and three invitational wins!

James started the season on a very hot Friday afternoon
on the last day of August at the Granite Bay Invitational meet
at Sierra College. It was over 100 degrees and James was running the
freshman race at 4:30 in the afternoon - the hottest part of the
day. James got a strong start and led for the first mile. The heat
got the better of him and he "hit
the wall" at the mile mark. A freshman from down south (who looked like
he got held back about 3 times) took over the race at that point.
James finished 2nd in 12:12 (some think the course was little long)
just 14 seconds behind the burly freshman from Madera South. The
Bella Vista freshman boys team placed 3rd.
The following Saturday we traveled to Vacaville for the Lagoon
Valley invitational - some refer to it as Big Momma named after
the enormous hill the runners must traverse. There is also a "little
sister". James once
again competed in the freshman race. James
had a great race winning the 2-mile race in 12:01 with a 42 second
lead on 2nd place. Of the 303 boys competing that day in the freshman,
frosh/soph and JV 2-mile races, James had the second fastest time
of the day. The freshman team placed 5th.
The first league meet of the season was contested at Rio Americano
High School on the Wednesday after Lagoon Valley. James took an
early lead in the freshman boys race. His coach was out on the
course so James asked her if he should "go for a good time" or "save
himself for the big meet on Saturday". Coach Fagundes told him he had
a 100M lead so he could take it easy. James' winning time was 10:09
- the next boy in was at 10:40. The freshman team placed 3rd.
James' next race was a huge invitational in Concord. James competed
in the frosh/soph division for the first time. There were 240 boys
in James race. After getting off to a great start, James struggled
a bit on the trail that wound around the huge hill - he says his
legs were tired. He got passed by quite a few kids and was in about
30th place coming off the hill. James recovered on the steep precarious
down hill and was able to gain back most of what he lost going
up. James finished in 6th place. All 5 boys ahead of him were sophomores.
James had the fastest freshman time of the day and the 9th fastest
time out of approximately 600 freshman and sophomore boys competing
that day. The Bella Vista frosh/soph team placed 15th out of 35
teams.
The
next weekend we were off to Angels Camp for the Brette Hart/Frogtown
Invitational. James was given the choice of competing in the frosh/soph
race or the freshman race. James chose the freshman race because
he had put on 41 miles that week and his legs were tired (they
are training through the invitationals). He told his coach he would
rather go for the easy win instead of having to battle some big
beastly sophomores. James did get the win but it wasn't quite as
easy as he had hoped. At a little over a mile, his buddy and former
teammate, Robbie S., was on his heels. James wanted to win by over
a minute so I "encouraged" him
to pick it up. I didn't see him again until he was coming down
the home straight - with a 39 second lead on 2nd place! James'
time on this course was 11:10. There were a total of 77 boys in
his race. The freshman boys placed 3rd.
On Friday, September 28th, a small contingent from Bella Vista
High School traveled down south to compete, the next day, in the
Kenny Staub Invitational in La Crescenta with a side trip to Magic
Mountain after the race. James had a great race wining the Division II
sophomore race in 17:15 (all races were three miles). This was James'
first time competing in a three mile race in a high school meet. It was
good practice for him being that he wants to run varsity in the next
league meet (varsity races are always three miles).
