After 4 years of trying for a national title, the Buffalo Chips boys have finally
done it! The Midget Boys team (11 and 12 year olds) placed
3rd at the Junior Olympic Cross Country Nationals on December 10th. The meet
was held at Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island. It had snowed about a
foot the day before the race but the day of the race dawned bright and beautiful
with temperatures in the teen and twenties. The host team worked very hard to
get the course cleared but couldn't get rid of all the snow. The boys had to
navigate through snow and ice along the way. Fortunately, our California boys
didn't have any trouble with the elements finishing 8th, 20th, 34th (James),
54th and 59th for a 3rd place National team finish. |

Season Highlights
The season started with the annual road trip to San
Luis Obispo with the Paddeck Family. James took 2nd place to Nathan Paddeck
on the hilly 3K course. The next day James competed in the Heritage Bank's
10K in Paso Robles. James ran it for a workout and finished in 42:42.
The sponsor, Heritage Bank, randomly gave out 10 and 50 dollar bills to
all finishers. James and Nathan both received $50.00 bills as they crossed
the finish line!
The 2nd USTAF race was held at Point Pinole. This course is the same course
they will be running at the Association meet later in the season. James
set a PR of 11:20 and placed 3rd to teammates Jeroen and Nathan.
The 3rd race of the season was at Spring Lake Park in Santa Rosa.
Unfortunately, a big 'ol dog jumped in to the race when the gun went off
and interfered with the runners. James got a bad start because he was
trying to stay behind the dog and then got tripped up on the dogs leash.
Despite all the dog drama, James had a decent race finishing 4th to teammates
Robbie, Jeroen and Nathan.
The next weekend was a double-header with the Bella Vista Bronco Invitational at Folsom High School on Saturday and the USATF meet in Golden Gate Park on Sunday. James finished 3rd in the middle school division at the Bronco Invite and came back the next day to finish 4th. Both races were swept by Buffalo Chips boys.
The Buffalo Chips Running Club put on a race at Folsom High School on October
30th. This meet featured the biggest turnout of the season. James pulled
a calf muscle and finished a disappointing 5th place but the midget boys
were in rare form with the winner, Jeroen and 2nd place Robbie, finishing
in times that put them up with the best in the nation.
