In addition to playing basketball for his middle school, James is training for triathlons
with the River
City Speed team (sponsored by Bicycles Plus) and will be
running track for his middle school this spring.
Video of Silicon Valley Tri
James, competing for the River City Speed Youth Triathlon Team,
finished in the top 3 in all 5 of his triathlons this season. James
started the season (and his first official triathlon) with a 3rd
place finish at the West Sac Tri in the Port of Sacramento. James'
second tri was the Wildflower Triathlon down near San Luis Obispo.
This was a huge event drawing competitors from all over the world.
James competed in the Mountain Bike Division finishing 2nd to his
buddy Jeroen. The third tri of the season was the Silicon Valley
Tri in Cupertino. The 200M swim, 6 mile bike and 1.25 mile run was
one of the shortest tri's he did all season. James has a great swim
and bike but faltered a bit at the end of the run getting passed in
the last 300 meters to place 2nd in his wave and 3rd overall. The
next triathlon was the 2nd of the Tri for Fun series at Rancho Seco
Park. This was the longest tri James did with a 800M swim, 16 mile
bike and 3 mile run. James came out of the water in good position
but held back a little too much on the bike. He had a great run making
up quite a bit of ground on his strongest competitors who just happen
to be his teammates. He finished 3rd to his teammates Robbie H. and
Jeroen. James final tri of the season was the third in the Tri for
Fun series. James did well in the swim and tore it up on the bike
but cramped up on the run. Despite the trouble on the run, James was
able to pull out the win earning the coveted Tri for Fun Championship
hat!
James also placed 2nd in points in the Prairie City Mountain Bike Series this summer and placed in the top three in the two Chanoko duathlons he competed in last winter. As for running, James had another successful middle school season finishing the season in 3rd place at the District Championships with a 5:02 in the 8th grade boys mile.
It deserves special mention that James finished middle school with
a 3.5 or greater GPA for all four semesters of 7th and 8th grade.
James is as good a student as he is an athlete.
